Long Awaited Update

It has been a whirlwind for us as we have been working with our doctors to slowly get Joy off her medications (her endoscopy results were negative!  Praise God!).  This is her first week without Prevacid and she's been doing pretty well aside from a cold/low grade fever. She doesn't always eat/drink a lot so we feed her fruits/cereal while she plays and she really likes it. We don't worry as much because we know she won't starve herself.  We're just praying that baby #2 won't have the same feeding problems as Joy.

Overall, Joy has been a fun girl to be around these days.  She communicates well with us (verbal and pointing) and seems to be having lots of fun rummaging through our cabinets, bins, etc.  Enjoy the pictures and videos below, which gives a glimpse into our lives.

Milestones

1.  Walking finally!  After weeks of walking with our help, our little girl finally decided to walk on her own today.  We are very proud of her!  Good thing we have those gates to keep her confined.  Now let the chasing begin!

2.  Feeding Baby.  We've also been training Joy to take care of her little brother, who is scheduled to arrive in a month. So far she has learned how to "feed baby" but only as long as she gets some too  =D

3.  Anyone looking to hire a cleaner?  Joy loves to clean/wipe stuff, including her own mess. Perhaps I should teach her how to vacuum?  LOL

Merry Christmas!

I know it's been a while since I last updated but things here have been busy!  I'll be sure to write a more detailed entry later but for now, Merry Christmas from Selena, Joy, me and soon to be baby boy!

Sickly Joy

Joy has been under the weather for the past 2 weeks.  She's been coughing up a lung and almost every other night she wakes up around 3am coughing and choking.  So also hasn't been drinking/eating as well due to her illness.  So how do we keep her hydrated?  Ice chips!

Also, Joy's endoscopy is scheduled for Monday, November 25 at 7 am at Children's Hospital in DC.  We are thankful that it's early in the morning so that Joy won't be starving too much but it also means we have to arrive at the hospital at 5am.  As parents, we have to do what's best for Joy and our hope and prayer is that the doctors find nothing else wrong and that Joy will handle the anesthesia better than last time.  Thanks in advance for all your prayers!

Smiles, Laughter, and Tongue Wagging??

God has blessed us with a child who continually makes us smile and laugh, even after a long and exhausting day at work, sleepless nights while pregnant (for Selena), and dealing with other crazy drama in our lives.  I hope these pictures and videos can make you smile and laugh as well!

This is also grandma's last week here with us.  She returns home on Saturday and all of us, especially Joy, will miss her! Thankfully she will be returning in January to help us when baby #2 arrives.

And for those who are interested to know, Joy's next endoscopy is scheduled for Nov 25 at DC Children's Hospital. The main thing we are looking at is whether Joy has eosinophilic esophagitis, which could explain why she is a bad eater these days.  We also need to do some blood work to confirm results from her latest allergy testing.
Joy tested positive for tomatoes (bottom) and avocado (middle left).   She was negative for soy.

Growing Personality, Eating and Food allergies, Another Endoscopy

It's been a while!  Here's an update on Joy...

Growing Personality.  Joy is a funny girl. Every morning I bring her downstairs to play and she immediately grabs her stuffed animals and begins to "purr".  She LOVES soft things like blankets, clothing, toys, etc.

When I return home from work, she immediately crawls like there is no tomorrow to me.  Sometimes I can't get to her fast enough and then she starts to whine and cry until I pick her up.  No wonder people say she has me wrapped around her little finger.

Joy also crawls normally now (no longer in the military) and can cruise on our furniture very well.  She still hasn't tried to stand up or walk but the physical therapist is impressed by the amount of progress.  We hope Joy will be able to walk before baby #2 arrives in late January.

Food allergies.  After Joy was sick with roseola, she started eating very well for several days.  Maybe her body was telling her she needed to eat.  Then we resumed our food challenges with soy sauce, soy beans/tofu, coconut milk, tomato sauce, and eggs.  We tried each food item for about a week and then moved on to another food.  We constantly checked for signs of allergic reactions but she didn't vomit (gagged a bit more than normal), didn't break out in hives on her face or get puffy lips/eyes, but she DID have occasionally have spots of itchy/redness behind or in her ears, back of her neck, or sometimes on her back.  But it was very mild and didn't seem to bother her that much.  It's been so difficult to determine what exactly she's allergic to so we're taking Joy back to the allergist for another round of allergy testing.  Could she be intolerant as opposed to allergic?

Difficulty with Meals.  As time as progressed with the food challenges, she has progressively become worse as an eater in terms of volume.  She still only drinks 7-9oz of formula/days and there are meals where she will eat a few pieces of food and then toss the food off the high chair, suck her thumb and refuse to eat again.  Teething?  Picky?  When she refuses, we try to find something she is willing to eat, including junk food (e.g. french fries), fresh and dried fruits, or whatever we are eating as long as she's not allergic to it.  We have noticed that she does eat better when we're out at a restaurant (distracted?).

At this point, we are now concerned that she hasn't gained any weight since July and she has a lot more bad meals than good ones.  For breakfast, we stopped giving purees for a while and then went back to it only to then stop again.  For some meals, she will try to escape the high chair by standing up which is a major safety risk.  So she's either one of the most pickiest babies on the planet or there is something else going on medically that we haven't identified. It has been stressful trying to feed Joy for Selena, my mom and me.  But either way, I'm not going to culinary school to learn how to cook gourmet baby food.

Next Steps: Given her persistent difficulty with feeding, we have been in touch with our pediatrician and the doctors at Children's to perform a second endoscopy.  We need to rule out eosinophilic esophaghitis, which can cause kids to stop eating if they repeatedly have allergic reactions to a food.  So please continue to pray for Joy as we try to figure all of this out.

Happy Halloween!

I took Joy to the Kentlands treat or treat event last Saturday.  I figured that it would be a bit late for her to go out on Halloween since she sleeps early around 7:30pm. Since Selena works on Saturdays, my mom and I took her to various shops in the Kentlands area and Joy collected all sorts of candy and toys.  It was cold but thankfully her mouse outfit was extra cushy and warm.  Too bad Joy was completely oblivious (as you can tell in the photo) but overall it was a nice experience worth remembering.

Happy Halloween!

So what happens when a 1 year old stays up WAY past her bedtime?  Exhibit A...you get a delirious Joy who can't stop laughing...

Penn State Pride

My wife went to Penn State and we always battle about where Joy will end up going to college.  But I thought this morning it would be nice for Joy to experience her mom's college pride.

While I've been furloughed

Parents beware! When your kids get sick, you also get sick...sick and tired of them that is! With the government shutdown, I anticipated long naps at home and catching up on my tv shows and movies. But when Joy became sick with a high fever (infected with roseola) AND decided that she wanted a few more teeth, I lost my golden opportunity for relaxation.  Such is life...

Joy can finally crawl (not belly)

Joy has been a bit lazy when it comes to crawling.  She has an affinity for the military apparently because she's always on her belly as if she's in the trenches.  But with the help of her physical therapist, she is finally crawling like other babies her age.

Future Doctor?

I think Joy may have a career in medicine down the road, though she'll have to learn how to use that stethoscope properly.

Happy Birthday Joy!

Today Joy turned 1 year old.  Last night as I was rocking her to sleep, I thought about how far she's come and how blessed I am to have her in my life.  She arrived a bowl of jello, fought through difficult obstacles with reflux, food allergies, and a feeding tube, and now she can crawl, stand, cruise (a little), wave high, clap, smile and eat.  She still makes my heart melt!  What a journey it has been and I pray that my little Joy will continue to grow and thrive many years ahead.
